AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE Programs For Families
There is nothing quite like a child's first experience of the magic of ballet. From the fluid grace of the dancers to the wonderful rhythms of the music and the colorful array of costumes, a child's first ballet is a memory he or she will carry for life.
American Ballet Theatre is committed to making ballet accessible to younger audiences. That is why it has devised innovative and unforgettable opportunities for families to experience the wonder of dance.
ABT Kids
ABTKids Performance
Saturday, June 9, 2007
Share the wonder of dance with your entire family as the Company presents ABTKids, a one-hour long performance designed to introduce young audiences to the magic and beauty of dance. The performance, recommended for children ages 4-12, is narrated by a member of ABT's Artistic Staff and features highlights from the Company's vast repertoire.
Tickets
Single tickets will be available through the Metropolitan Opera House Box Office at (212) 362-6000 or by instant online ticketing beginning April, 2007. Tickets are $25 each.
ABTKids Pre-Performance Workshops
Friday June 8, 2007. Beginning 4:30pm at 890 Broadway
Saturday June 9, 2007. Beginning 9:30am at The Metropolitan Opera House
Join us prior to ABTKids for an hour of fun, hands-on activities at the ABTKids Pre-Performance Workshops. Bring your children ages 4 through 12 for an exciting and informative introduction to the works they will see on The Met stage. Children, divided by age, are invited to
participate in activities directed by ABT Teaching Artists. As an introduction to the movement of ballet, the children are guided through a ballet warm-up and taught a short piece of choreography based on a work they will see during the ABTKids performance. In past workshops,
children tried their hand at the basics of stage dueling from Romeo and Juliet and bounded through the Fan Dance from Don Quixote. There is no need for any prior dance background, as we welcome all to experience the joy of dancing. Children are encouraged to wear their favorite dance clothes.
Tickets
Tickets for the workshop, priced at $20 for each child and $20 for each adult, are available only through ABT’s Department of Education & Training at (212) 419-4321. * Please note that the Pre-Performance Workshops are only available to those who purchase tickets for the ABTKids performance. For more information, please call the ABTKids Hotline at (212) 419-4321. If you would like to receive updates on ABTKids via email, please send a message to kedwards@abt.org with “ABTKids Email” in the subject linee.

THE METROPOLITAN OPERA
The Metropolitan Opera Early Notes Program (Grades K–2) The Early Notes Program introduces children in kindergarten, first and second grades (ages 5–8) to the wonderful world of opera in the classroom and at the opera house. Working in select New York City Public Schools, the Met’s Education Director introduces and explores the basics of opera in the classroom. The children also attend a rehearsal at the opera house, and participate in backstage tours and demonstrations of the various theatrical arts involved in opera production.
In addition to providing these hands-on learning experiences, the Metropolitan Opera is developing its own opera story books for children and grade-specific resource guides to help teachers immerse their students in music-making as well as opera.
The Met continues to expand the Early Notes Program to respond to the needs of the students within the New York City area and the educational goals of the New York City Department of Education. The Program was founded with support from the ChevronTexaco Foundation.
