SHOSTAKOVICH Violin Concerto No. 1
It was a dangerous time for music in 1948 when Shostakovich was completing his First Violin Concerto -- during Stalin's regime, a month after the notorious Zhdanov Decrees had censured the composer for "bourgeois, formalist deviations." From ominous Nocturne to spectacular Burlesque, the work by a master has transcended political shifts to become a beloved virtuoso vehicle for the soloist and a masterpiece for all time.
Young New Yorkers for the Philharmonic Galas & Special Events
Each year the Young New Yorkers participate in two fundraisers. The sold-out "A Mid-Winter’s Eve" took place on Thursday, February 2, 2006. The evening, which raised over $90,000, began with a New York Philharmonic concert conducted by Jeffrey Kahane. Maestro Kahane also played and conducted Mozart's Piano Concerto in G major and Piano Concerto in D minor. Also featured were Philharmonic Assistant Concertmaster Michelle Kim and Associate Principal Viola Rebecca Young. A gala dinner dance at the Racquet & Tennis Club followed. The evening was made possible by the generous support of Mikimoto, who also donated an Akoya cultured pearl necklace for the raffle prize. Each guest went home with a black crystal tote bag compliments of Target.
